Well, it's that time of year, and as expected the long-awaited first annual Camp Fastforward kicked off today. Held in Los Angeles, California, Camp Fastforward is a whole week of celebration dedicated to the people who make amateur comedy possible ... the biggest amateur comedy event of the year.
Camp Fastforward began at 4pm in the basement of the lovely Waite Phillips Hall at the University of Southern California, where 30 high-powered editing systems greet anyone who would care to show up. Fastforward and Orange Cow Productions founder Garrett Gilchrist was on hand as the festivities began.
The plan: give those who'd arrived a nice barbecue meal and a tour of USC, then head to Pacific Apartments, Garrett's tiny and depressing apartment just north of USC which he shares with four roommates who hate him and no girlfriend, and then begin the fun with screenings of great amateur comedies!
The first night's films include Mystery Fandom Theater 3000: Little Red Riding Hood (from mft3k.org), Blanc Screen's Torgo and the Quest for Fuck and Pervert Goes Home (a rare prerelease version known as the "Cannes edit"), and 2 hours of shorts by GMP Pictures. A sneak peek at the upcoming Orange Cow drama Gods of Los Angeles would also be included, as well as a new short "I've Been Mocked Enough" and scenes from the upcoming Ghostbusted 2.
It is now 10:12 PM, and no one has shown up.
Camp Fastforward and Orange Cow Productions founder Garrett Gilchrist has gotten depressed and lonely and instead of having to watch amateur films again, went to Burger King, bought a crappy burger for a dollar because it was all he could afford, did some editing on a scene for Gods of LA which had horrible sound and depressed him further, then boredly started off a night of movie viewing with the Terry Jones film "Mr. Toad's Wild Ride" starring Steve Coogan and Eric Idle ... which Garrett had already seen four times anyway. He plans eventually to go to bed.

Just watched the video from today's camp....
I think it really captures the spirit of amateur filmmaking, the personal experience it is, and how we are so often alone in our dreams. And it reminded me of how lonely I felt at USC, where everyone watches out only for themselves, and could give a flying f--- about anyone else.
Looking forward to tomorrow's update!
