Area Filmmaker Remakes Hong Kong Classic "Mad Monk." - March 17, 2004 : 12pm - cm Austin, TX - Bob Erickson of "Q Zap Entertainment" announced today that he plans, sometime in the near future, when he has some free time, whenever that is – to remake the Hong Kong comedy classic "Mad Monk." The ambitious US amateur remake is temporarily titled: "Mad Whore." The original Mad Monk starred the Hong Kong comedy legend Stephen Chow as titular character "Mad Monk the Dragon Fighter Lo Han." Mad Monk is an unorthodox Buddhist monk who has received divine enlightenment and abandons his monastery to roam the earth. He then helps the poor by outsmarting greedy landlords, sadistic government officials, and ruthless mountain bandits. The remake "Mad Whore" is about a prostitute named "Sad Sue" who attains supernatural psychic powers after going insane from syphilis. She leaves her whorehouse and roams the earth to free slaves from their southern plantation owners, one legged pimps, and ruthless mountain bandits. Mr. Erickson offered the following insight on the idea behind the remake: "I don’t want to remake the original word by word. I want to jazz it up a bit. I want to introduce something that American audiences can identify with, in line with this great country’s lineage. I want to tap into the vernacular that is unique to American history, and yet very similar to Buddhist culture. I came to the conclusion that the subject of slavery and the old west’s filthy whorehouses would best suit my purposes." Mr. Erickson also guarantees that fans of the original will not be disappointed by the remake. "Mad Whore" has a different context. But all the same fun stuff from the original movie is still there - such as the supernatural psychic fights, the martial arts acrobatics, the pearls of Zen wisdom – all with a little twist of syphilis." This is the fourth attempt at making a feature length movie by the "Q Zap" team. Chris Mundane Reporting BACK ... |
