Passion for Jesus Christ Unexpectedly Turned into Passion for Dirty Dancing. - March 09, 2004 - cm
Quebec – On Saturday, Filmmaker Andy Volstrum of "Scared Squirrel Productions" attended a screening of the "Passion of the Christ." Andy was well aware of the media hype, but was prepared to watch this latest Jesus opus with an open mind. "Yeah many people said it’s too violent and too bloody. But you know, I’m prepared for all that. Because it’s like... it’s the Jesus, so it can’t go wrong you know. What I’m trying to say is, there is nothing that reaffirms and celebrates Christian values more than watching Jesus being tortured to death on the big screen with all that Digital Surround Sound."
"I think of it like watching the Saving of the Private Ryan," added Andy "Because nothing respects World War 2 veterans more then watching bunch of Hollywood actors getting shot on the big screen with all that Digital Surround Sound."
Nevertheless, Andy had a very unexpected reaction.
"It was a wonderful movie!" exclaimed Andy. "There weren't any of those alleged anti-semantic remarks. The movie never even said that Jews killed Jesus. Seriously folks, there wasn’t even any of that torturing and what not. This isn’t a movie about gore and violence. This is a movie about wonderful Cuban music. This is a movie about young people following their dreams. This is a movie about the passion for dancing, with an amazing supporting performance by Sela Ward. God I loved Sela Ward, I'd totally do her."
"Yeah I can see why somebody got physically ill during the movie. There were few walkouts and my mom threw up during middle of the dance contest. I'd just have to say that Cuban music isn’t for everyone. However, I have to say that calling it a "10 minute savage whipping sequence" is just plain racist."
What’s next for the Scared Squirrel Productions? "My next film will be about dancing," said Andy, stroking his oily goatee, "it will definitely be about dancing."
